Owning a convertible is a dream come true for many. Imagine speeding down the highway with the wind in your hair, enjoying the cool summer breeze and the warmth of the sun on your neck. But when it comes to purchasing a convertible, you need to consider more than just what make, model or color you’re interested in – you also need to decide whether you prefer hard or soft convertible tops. Both hard and soft tops have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and in many ways it comes down to what kind of climate you live in, where you plan to park your car, and your own personal preference. Here is a rundown of the pros and cons of both kinds of convertible tops:
- Soft Tops. These tops – made of fabric, canvas or vinyl – are more classic, as hard tops were developed later. Since soft tops are lightweight and don’t require extensive mechanical parts, the car as a whole may handle better – an important consideration if you’re investing in a pricey sports car that you expect to drive at high speeds. Soft convertible tops also preserve the lines of the vehicle, as some car enthusiasts feel that hard tops tend to look bulky from behind. Finally, soft tops are less expensive than hard tops. On the downside, they are more vulnerable to the elements and require UV protection to prevent fading from sun exposure; they offer less security in the event of a collision or a break-in; and they can be difficult to clean.
- Hard Tops. If you live in a climate where rain, snow or persistent sunshine is the norm, or if you don’t have a protected garage in which to store your vehicle, you may want to invest in a hard top for your convertible. Why? Because hard tops are strong enough to withstand a variety of weather conditions, while soft tops can crack, warp or fade over time. They may offer more protection in the event of a crash or accident, although some automakers feel that the safety benefits are negligible. They are also more difficult to break into than soft tops, and easier to clean. Drawbacks include the higher price and reduced storage capacity, since some of the mechanical parts are integrated into the backseat and/or trunk. Plus, due to the complex mechanisms that go into the hard top design, these tops are more likely to break or malfunction and require costly repairs.
So which one should you choose for your convertible? It depends on whether you want a car that will look flawless and handle impeccably, or if you would be willing to sacrifice a little of that glamor for greater safety, security and protection. The choice is yours.
If you have a soft top convertible, you may one day have to replace your top. In the end, the enjoyment will be all worth it.
